Angela Evelyn Bassett (born August 16, 1958) is an American actress, director, producer, and activist who is part of the of American Horror Story repertory company.

Biography[]

She is best known for her roles in which she plays strong female characters. Her résumé consists of high profile films such as Olympus Has Fallen and Green Lantern. Most notably, she portrayed Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It.

Work on American Horror Story[]

Angela Bassett joined the ensemble series in its third season, Coven when she portrayed a fictional version of Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. During the third season, Bassett was billed a special guest start regardless of episode count.

In the fourth season of American Horror Story, she portrayed Desiree Dupree, a three-breasted Freak Show performer at the Fräulein Elsa's Cabinet of Curiosities.

Bassett starred in the fifth season, titled Hotel as Ramona Royale, a blaxploitation star afflicted by a mysterious blood virus. For the fourth and fifth season, Angela Bassett is credited with the honorary "with" in the opening sequence.

Angela Bassett was cast as Monet Tumusiime, an actress re-enacting Lee Harris in "My Roanoke Nightmare", the narrative device for the sixth installment, titled Roanoke and credited with the honorary "and" in its ending credits. Angela Bassett also directed the sixth episode of the season, and the following year directed another episode, "Drink the Kool-Aid" for the seventh season, Cult although she doesn't feature in it.

Bassett briefly revised her role as Marie Laveau in the season finale of Apocalypse, "Apocalypse Then".

For her roles in Coven and Freak Show, she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
