Most episodes of American Horror Stories are stand-alone episodes, with independent stories, characters, and actors.

Installment 1[]

• Actors from the original series appear in the spin-off with either previous or new characters. Every episode from the first installment had at least one cast member from the original series.
  • Jamie Brewer, Dylan McDermott, and Celia Finklestein reprised roles originally from American Horror Story/Murder House.
  • John Carroll Lynch, Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, Naomi Grossman, Matt Bomer, Charles Melton, and Chad James Buchanan had new roles in American Horror Stories.
  • Kaia Gerber, Nico Greetham, and Blake Shields had roles in the first installment of American Horror Stories prior to roles in American Horror Story/Double Feature.
• Aaron Tveit is the only actor to portray more than one prominent character in the first installment.
• Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga were originally supposed to appear in "Rubber(wo)Man" as Tate Langdon and Violet Harmon respectively, but had their cameos cut in post-production.
• Ryan Murphy expanded the cast by adding Glee alum Kevin McHale, Pose actor Dyllón Burnside, and The Prom‘s Nico Greetham, which are all Murphy's productions.
• Several stunt and "creature" actors had multiple costumed performances throughout, including Troy Castaneda, Dane DiLiegro, Devyn LaBella, V Nixie, Baxter Humby, Sancho Martin, and Shane Carpenter.
• Shane Carpenter took over the role of Infantata from the late Benjamin Woolf. Luke Sonderman and Jackson Unvert took over the roles of Troy and Bryan, as the original actors (Kai and Bodhi Schulz) are visibly older than the ageless ghosts.

Installment 2[]

• Just like the first installment, the second brought some familiar names to the cast.
  • Cody Fern and Nico Greetham have performed in both American Horror Story and in the first installment of American Horror Stories.
  • Denis O'Hare, Gabourey Sidibe, Max Greenfield, Austin Woods, Seth Gabel, Rebecca Dayan, Cameron Cowperthwaite, Spencer Neville and Teddy Sears had previously been on the main franchise.
  • Julia Schlaepfer from The Politician, Dominique Jackson from Pose, Judith Light from The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and Impeachment: American Crime Story, Todd Waring from Impeachment: American Crime Story, and Bobby Hogan from 911:Lone Star also joined the cast of the second installment.
